Amzn reported a loss of 23 cents vs. loss of 8 cents estimate...Wow!
Missed on revenues as well and lowering Q4 guidance.
I can't believe Amazon is getting punished to the tune of .86% at the current time. Don't those idiots know that besides historically non-existent profits, massive losses are all part of Amazon's master plan to take over the world?

Thanks for the thoughtful analysis...

And now up $10. That's more like it!
I can't wait for Amazon to start collecting sales tax. That's gotta be good for at least a 50% boost in share price.

Why would this lead to a 50% boost?

Well that's just mighty presumptuous. It's hard to believe someone is repeatedly making an arse out of himself over someone sarcastically expressing his amazement over the moves in Amazon stock, which has become a spectator sport. You're obviously big into Amazon and don't like it when people poke fun.

Might be a while now C. Its getting smoked today. I have some shares, and chose to hold them through earnings. I wasnt expecting a great quarter, but man its getting killed right now.

From the guidance, investors may be over-reacting to the lower margins. Apple rolled out some new stuff this quarter. Apple is going to be fine as long as they control the market share. I wouldn't be worried unless AMZN or MSFT start releasing sales numbers that show them significantly eating into their numbers. Apple is king. But when you are at the top, you almost always have to impress.

I can agree with all your analysis there C. Its hard to hold through these selloffs like this. I have been through a few, and it has alway come back pretty strong.
I was always comfortable until recently when the competition seemed to have caught up to them.
You want to know what's funny? I dont own a single Apple product........Well, I guess I technically own 500.

Wow, I really got under your skin by dissin' Amazon. I promise you, it wasn't my intent, and I wasn't singling you out. Hell, before now, you were unknown to me. Here's a word of advice that might get you taken more seriously: Instead of complaining about on-topic posts directed at no one with a bunch of lying bile, like accusing me of being an "Apple fanboi [sic]", post something serious. For example, you could have regaled the board with your insightful analysis of why Amazon merits a seemingly infinitely long rope. OTOH, if you just want to pick fights, which apparently is your only purpose here, you should take your dumb arse to the OT or better still the ultimate haven of idiots, the political board, where people live to fight with each other.

haha I'm the exact opposite. I have a mac, two ipads, nano, iphones... well my wife does!
And I used to own the stock, but I got fearful of how high it had risen and how dependent it is on new product development every year. It's done an awesome job at having at environment that people want to stay in. Will that last? I dunno. Just not worth the risk IMO.
I own amzn because I think the market share will continue to grow. Their mvmt to tablets is simply a retail strategy for them so lower margins aren't as significant for them. I became increasingly bullish when target and walmart dropped them from the shelves as it became aparent that they are a real threat to their business. I was close to selling them a few weeks ago, but they've since pulled back off my sell point. I've almost owned it for a year so I'll probably hold through next year, hope romney gets elected, and long term capital gains goes to 15 or lower.

Doesn't Amazon lose money on every Kindle Fire they sell with the hope they will sell more books and movies to make up the loss?

It was ignorant in a place where people come to learn. And you then followed it up with another ignorant statement. And then someone not knowing better, thought you were being truthful. So I helped him out. fanboi

Me too C. I am still way to the good on the investment in Apple, but probably should set a floor and maybe take some off the table. It is in my IRA, and I would like to be able to retire in a few years.

Most likely. It's similar to what sony did with playstation a few years back. They were losing money on every playstation sold in hopes people bought video games. Problem was a lot of people were using it to just watch bluerays as it's processor was so much faster than higher end blueray players. But I think it worked out in the end. I stopped following.

The word "ignorant" doesn't mean what you think it does, which appears to be, "anything I don't like".
Amidst the sarcasm, my first post addressed the puzzlement so many people have concerning Amazon, namely the ever-rising share price in the face of low profits and the sharp increase in share price today following the loss and lowered guidance they reported yesterday. My second post addressed the concern so many people have over the fate of Amazon's already razor-thin margins once states start collecting sales tax on a wider basis.
You ignored all that to attack me personally. I ignored your first witless reply to me and only replied when you started with your baseless and lying "fanboi" [sic] schtick (which you have just pathetically repeated), and I correctly ascertained that you own Amazon and are hassling me because you don't like people to talk about things that make you uncomfortable. Instead of replying to those things, you personally attacked me without revealing your ownership of Amazon until after I called you out on it, even dismissing me as an "Apple fanboi" [sic] who "belongs on the OT", and now you've gone and made yourself out to be the "defender of truth" or something. Psychopath much?

You didn't address it. You just repeated a line to try to correlate earnings to stock price. If you don't understand how they aren't always related, I can't help you.

haha, right.

Since my first post in this thread was me crying about the amzn earnings, I don't know how I hid that from anyone...

I love that title "defender of truth." It fits quite well with what I have done on this board, if you read my post history.

Amazon is getting to the point where its almost rare to have a really decent deal there vs locally. The price margin just isnt as big as it used to be. If they start charging sales tax then there isnt much use to use them for goods.

If anyone is interested, Cramer is fixing to discuss the differences between these two stocks on mad money.
