I understand exactly what you are saying, that doesn't make it correct.

He obviously fits the definition of an athlete, and he is obviously great or elite at the definition of an athlete.

The point you are missing is that most competitive cyclists are great at more than cycling. Endurance athletes regularly compete in other endurance sports because the training is common. The biggest difference between training as a cyclist and training for the Ironman is the proportional amount of time spent on each facet of the race.
