Sitting out the last two games of the season, Tigers outfielder Ty Cobb wins the third of his nine consecutive batting titles by edging Nap Lajoie by less than a percentage point. The player-manager of the Cleveland Naps, who had six bogus hits on the last day thanks to the Browns' attempt to dethrone the Georgia Peach with their defensive indifference, still loses the race .3849 to .3840.

Didn't the league still recognize both as batting champion?
Boy, everyone hated Cobb's ever-livin' guts.

That guy did absolutely everything he could to win. If there were someone like him today, Barry Bonds would be considered a saint.

I haven't heard that phrase in forever.

I do not blame Cobb in this situation. The winner of the batting title got a new car.
SI wrote a terrific article on this race a year or two ago. There were so many statistical frick-ups. Nap just bunted down the third base line every damn time and they gave him a single.
FWIW, they both won a car. It can be safety assumed that Cobb used his to run over an orphanage and animal shelter.

That's what I thought. But think about how loathed Ty Cobb was. First, two teams conspire, in a doubleheader no less, to allow Nap Lajoie to get as many hits as possible to prevent Cobb from winning the title. And when that fails, the league gives Nap the car anyway. EVERYONE hated Cobb.
