See, this shows that you put more value on music than just the sound of it and whether you enjoy it. Remove yourself from the statement and read it again. Look at that reflexive hatred of "hipsters", despite no one having brought it up. Look at the details you provided to this Other. There is obvious resentment of this fictional construct, and it is based on his presumed musical preferences. That's fascinating to me.
I do. I love music. And I can't play an instrument, and I can't sing, so I have no idea how the sausage is made, but man it tastes good. Except for the stuff that tastes terrible. Hold on, you thought that tasted good? [insert hypothetical conversation]
But, yeah, I find it really fascinating how music actually has an effect on me. I concentrate better with EDM or classical playing. When I hear a really good dance song, I can't help but start moving to the beat -- I might be doing a shoulder shake while I type this. If I'm at the gym, I might toss up a few extra reps if "Bombs Over Baghdad" is playing. Etc. etc. etc.
And I am very interested in hearing in the ways that others respond to music and to what music they respond to. I don't think people are lying when they insist that they legitimately love the Beatles. They're feeling the music just like I might be feeling Outkast or Passion Pit or Sander Van Doorn or freaking Sublime or Led Zeppelin or Van Morrison or whatever floats my boat or finds my lost remote.
I do find it hard to articulate why I like music, or to try to describe how music sounds. So, maybe some aspects of it are completely binary: I like the way that sounds...end of analysis.* But it isn't all like that. Music is a societal common denominator. It's very interesting, and on multiple different levels.
So even though I'm fixing to log off...rest assured I'll be back...and the Beatles will still be overrated when I return.
*It's for this reason that I think music reviews are mostly gibberish and I give them zero weight.**
**To be fair,, Lester Bangs' review of "astral weeks" was pretty awesome.
