How long have you been playing? Just play whatever when you have free time. Leave the guitar next to the couch and just tool around on scales during commercials. A song that really helped me learning early on was Change by Blind Melon. It uses several common chord structures that help build up your strength and muscle memory. I'm sure other people could suggest others.

I can't really remember exactly how long, but I think it's been at least 6 or 7 years. When I started out I thought practicing scales and whatnot was boring and now that I want to practice that kind of stuff to get better I don't have much time to do so.

I will say that the game Rocksmith is a really helpful tool for people who already know how to play to get better at it.
