I disagree with this statement in its entirety. Great music is more than just something you enjoy, it becomes a part of you. It says something about the human condition or expresses emotions or thoughts that words cannot express.

Beethoven wasn't just great because he wrote the best symphonies, he was also shoving in the faces of his rich, effete audiences the realities of the Age of Napoleon. Stravinksy's Rites of Spring is radical even today because it is NOT all that enjoyable. It's harsh and atonal, and friggin' brilliant. I don't even like ballet and I'll listen/watch to Rites of Spring whenver I have the chance. It's a staggering achievement.

If you only view pop music as a commodity, then yes, the consumer's enjoyment is the only metric. But I don't view music as a commodity.
