A co-worker sent me this article claiming Brees is the reason for our record.

Interesting argument. I agree with it to a certain extent but our defensive schemes are the main culprit IMO.

well..yeah, the Offense scores 25+ a game.

the Defense allows 25+ a game.

I dont see how Brees signing early to "franchise all-pro guard Carl Nicks", can help our guys on D stop a run.

You don't think we're missing Tracy Porter a little bit?

Blame the defense. Steve Spagnuolo hasn't made a difference as defensive coordinator.

He most certainly has. Defense is twice as bad as it was last year

I commented at the time that Brees' selfish ways would cost the Saints wins. It has.

And there it is....trying to prove himself right. I didn't hear him praising Brees for not holding out when he was vastly underpaid for 6 years....

No doubt. It's amazing the difference a coach can have with pretty much the same players.

I keep hearing how Spags "system" takes time to learn. If it takes this damn long then what's the point? What happens when new players have to come in and learn the system? Are we just screwed all over again? Or does his system only work when you have 4 pro-bowl defensive linemen....hmmmmmmm.....

I think we are missing more than Tracy Porter right now.

NFL is the best of the best, but not ever player is going to be a star. They get their opportunity, its up to them to take advantage and shine if they have the talent.

Unfortunately, for us..double digit years have been filled with having a mediocre defense. 2009 things clicked and we were better than average. Porter really isn't that outstanding..he worked his arse off in 2009 and i'd have loved to see him retire as a Saint for everything he did.

I'd say since the late 1980s and the early 1990s, saints haven't really had that special of a D.

Now, if we had some players equal to the Dome Patrol..with this offense..We'd have 2 more rings by now.

If only we could combine the Dome Patrol with our Offense now....

we thought he was expendable. We signed multiple free agents on defense instead of him. Had nothing to do with Drew

Schematically we're sound.

We're not executing well on defense. We have some guys who are missing assignments and "cheating" a bit, which exposes us to big plays.

From a different thread:

I keep seeing the same bullshite posted over and over about Drew's contract killing the Saints this season. We have yet to really see an impact for Drew Brees' contract.

For those blaming the loss on Nicks and Meachem on Brees:

We weren't going to pay Nicks the most money in NFL history for a guard while having the 2nd highest paid guard already on the roster (and having Grubbs in free agency). We couldn't get in a bidding war with Tampa Bay's unlimited cap space. We weren't going to pay Meachem because of his injury issues and the amount of money he was asking.

On defense:
We added Lofton and Bunkley. Those are 2 great additions on paper. We also added Hawthorne as another good addition.

We decided to part ways with Tracy Porter. We had plenty of cap room to sign him, but decided it wasn't worth it. We have $8 million in cap space for this season, and he signed for 1 year, $4 million

Future Implications:

The salary cap is set to drastically increase in 2014 with the new NFL TV deal. The $8 million we have saved this year actually rolls over into the 2013 cap. His contract reflects the new TV deal and the rollover. Aaron Rodgers will get a larger contract, and it is comparable to Peyton's who is coming off a major injury

Yall need to do some research before spouting off the same tired crap over and over again. Drew's contract should still allow us to be a contender for the remainder of his tenure with Sean Payton

No time for in-depth research nor do I care to delve into detail about the cap, just linking an article relavant to the Saints.

No.. I would agree that defense hasn't been the same since Sharper left.

Haven't we missed Tracy Porter a little bit every season of his NFL career?

:rimshot:

He wasn't given the China Doll award for no reason. Why pay $4 million for a guy who plays only 12 games? I like Tracy but he couldn't stay on the field
