People freak the frick out when it comes to cutting down live oaks. Everyday people level valuable habitat in EBR and no one cares, but you touch a couple oaks and people lose it. Not saying it's right or not to cut down these trees in question, just pointing out how most people are hypocrites.

Also, a quick look at the trees and I estimate them to be worth about $250,000 in total.

That's bull shite.

This is a beautiful Live Oak and it does not "need" to be removed.

Yeah, I think it would be pretty difficult to have a major success record with tranplanting a tree of this size.

Worth $250k of what? Firewood?

There are more trees. These are in the way of progress. Either bitch about the trees and not the traffic, or the traffic and not the trees. You don't get both.

I drive that stretch pretty much daily and don't see why they'd have to cut the trees down. I'm no planner but I don't see why the one lane could be left alone until they got past the trees then widened to two. Wouldn't hurt a thing. Traffic doesn't ever backup to the end of that street nor come close.

Takes in to account several things. Stormwater, air quality, habitat value, aesthetic value, etc.

re: Baton Rouge cutting down 100 year old Live Oaks....

There are major underground utilities on the opposite side of the road. People would be bitching that the project cost 1 to 2 million dollars more to move those utilities.

People would be bitching if they moved the road and saved the trees but the contractor still killed the trees with his construction equipment.

If they had decided to move the trees, people would be bitching that their tax dollars are paying to move trees that might not end up living.

DPW made a mistake when they didn't hire Harvey Updyke to poison the trees since he has experience in that department. That way there would have been easy to explain to the public. DPW should have cut them down at midnight.
