That is where the writer went off with the hyperbole - did he even watch the games of all the NC teams in the past 10 years including Bama against WKU/Georgia southern and the debacle with UT , LSU misstep with Zook, Ohio state (their entire season).
Every team has issues with losing focus against lesser competition - it is reality when dealing with college players. The point is do they continue to win or not.
The coaches never mentioned tricks or any fancy terms in order to focus on the task at hand - the writers are trying to subtly project their views on that when publishing the article.
