EDIT:

Blizzard released official numbers recently, and it's nowhere near as bad as this analyst predicted. In one week, Blizzard sold 2.7 million copies, not shabby for a game this old

LINK

In comparison to other expansions:

-The Burning Crusade - 2.4M First Day, 3.5M First Month
-Wrath of the Lich King - 2.8M First Day, 4M First Month
-Cataclysm - 3.3M First Day, 4.7M First Month

In addition to this, WoW is also back over the 10 million subscriber mark

Original Post:

quote:

The fourth expansion has sold around 600,000 to 700,000 copies at retail since its launch on Tuesday, the firm estimates. Speaking to Venturebeat, Lazard explained how each new World of Warcraft expansion has outsold its predecessors. Mists of Pandaria sales, however, are down 60% from the previous expansion pack, Cataclysm, which has sold 3.3 million copies since its December 2010 launch.

quote:

Although these initial sales figures don't take digital sales into account, Lazard analyst Atul Bagga doesn't believe Mists of Pandaria's digital sales will make up for its poor retail performance.

Cataclysm didn't go over too well. People enjoyed the expansion when it first came out, but when it came down to raiding and heroics, people started leaving the game in droves.

This combined with how poor of a reputation Diablo 3 has, and I imagine the panda theme had something to do with it, but I think people are finally starting to become disenchanted with Blizzard.

I know some people might say to wait for the digital sales information from Blizzard, but Blizzard normally makes a press release the day after each expansion to brag about how many copies they sold... not so much this time around.

Friends of mine who still play WoW complain about how Blizzard seemingly changes things just for the sake of changing them.

For instance, the new talent system. Although it's simpler and more straight forward than the old system, players were used to the old, and had well-established builds worked out for every situation.

Now it's back to square one.

Well Blizzard's reasoning is that they cut it down to give you "real choice" and they say that the vast majority of players use the exact same specs so there is no point in having big talent trees.

I strongly disagree with their stance on it. It's dumb only being able to improve your character once every 15 levels which is how it is in MoP. Back in WotLK, there were 80 levels and every single time you would get to put a talent point in.

Then cata came around and you would only do that every 2 or 3 levels.

Then take a look at Diablo 3, when you level up, you do absolutely nothing to advance your character.

Blizzard severely underestimates the psychological aspect of manually powering up your character. They are stuck on this whole "talent trees just give an illusion of choice" kick, which IMO has made their games worse.

Yeah, shelling out $60 for a game you hate and never play.

Atul Bagga is a fricking retard. A majority of the people who play wow got the digital download. Don't know what the frick that guy is talking about.

Trust me - that's going to account for 80 - 85% of sales for this expansion. Just a quick survey of my 250ish member guild (which 90% were online at launch) had EVERYONE with the digital download. Not a single person went to stand in line to buy the game.

Just a little to chew on before you all go "OMG WOW IS DED" and such.

Considering EQ is still open for business I don't think anyone thinks that WoW is about to "die", they are well past their peek though. I for one account for three copies that will not be bought.

This isn't really all that new tbh. Yes, they changed the system completely, but they were constantly buffing and nerfing mid xpac to the extent that builds changed to include/exclude certain abilities. Plus each tier of gear brought different stats to the table that made new builds more viable.

Plus, the new talent system keeps all the old abilities and keeps everything basically the same. The new talents are just utility abilities that are nice, but only top tier raiders will notice the difference between one choice or the other.

It isn't bad and then inferno happens and then it becomes a cycle of:

-grind for hours and make little progress
-die a lot
-check AH to see if you can sell anything or buy anything after the hours of grinding

I dont think WoW is dying, heck Ragnarok Online and EQ is still pulling in the numbers but there is more options now besides WoW and some of them its free to pay like GW2, SMT Imagine and others not only to a certain level (only to lvl 20).

If Blizzard goes away from the pay per month thing, they might see a jump in numbers.

Blizzard's game quality has gone through the floor. Still 1000x better than EA, though.

It will happen eventually. That's the standard MMO lifecycle now, and these big game companies are a vacuum of creativity.

I think the quality went down with they merge with Activision. My guess, they were try to make the causual folks happy and it didnt work out well. I was just remember back in the Vanilla WoW, you have to work for that Tier gear, now you just show up and get some.

Exactly what it was. When they dropped the trees from having a 51-point talent to having a 31-point talent at the top, the reasoning was that talents like Crit Chance +1% were "boring" (their exact word on it I believe).

Even then, the 31-point trees weren't as bad as I initially thought, and put in a lot of fun talents to toy with as well. I hate this new system so far, so little choice.
