And aside from profits, I see no reason this should be 3 films. They should have just put it all in just 2 special edition DVDs like they did last time. Safe bet we won't be getting those this time, and if we do it will add 15 minutes tops.

that was the first time i saw that trailer and to be honest it really did not excite me at all. i dont think this trilogy will be even remotely as good as LOTR. it almost kind of looks like a bad fairy tale type of movie. i'll hang up and take my abuse now

as a huge Tolkien fan, the Hobbit was my least favorite because of it's childish nature. That still puts it in great company. The Silmarillion is my favorite but I'm a sucker for back story. That said, it looks like PJ is making it more adult which is always a good thing. The darker the better. can not wait

Does anyone else think that Gollum should not be seen in his full form in this film? If future generations approach them in order (Hobbit then Lord of the Rings), then they will already know what Gollum looks like. Its not like it would have been hard to keep him shrouded in shadow during the scene.

I can't wait. I'm worried that they set the bar so high with the LOTR that everyone is setting themselves up for disappointment. Like if it isn't one of the best movies ever filmed then it will be considered a failure.

The book has a much different tone than LOTR, and the trailer reflects that. I think it's a good thing, I'm glad that Jackson is making these their own films. I still think it's overkill that they're being split into three movies.

This. X1000 The first trailer has a more darker feel to it. The story is superb. I'm not to worried. Peter Jackson has some work to do though.

Can't wait for this movie. If its half as good as LOTR, it'll be great.

Just watched it for the first time. WOW It did have a more PG like feel to this trailer compared to the other one which was more PG-13. Nothing wrong with that. It captures the essence of LOTR feel but makes it it's own from the feel of that trailer. It was more about the comedy and adventure on this trailer. I am getting goosebumps from anticipation. It will be perfect weekend before the best time of the year which is Christmas.

Not crazy about so much more of the hobit being filmed in front of green screen than lotr. When I was doing the lotr tour in nz they said there would often be 4 groups filming throughout the 2 islands during lotr. There were only 2 for the hobbit with much less location filming. One of the coolest things about lotr to me was the epic landscapes which were actually real. Gave a much grander feel to the films. Other than that...... Can't wait.
Sorry if this is resurrectiong a dead thread. This is part of my concern about the hobbit. But I think they are going to have a lot of real locations in the movie. They are filming completely differently than they did before (block shooting) so this might be a reason why there are only 2 units rather than 4. Also, using green screen doesn't always mean there won't be real locations inserted into the backgrounds. They could just film a location and insert it to the bacground rather than CGI it. My concern though is the increase in the use of CGI and how it looks so far. They can't do miniatures anymore so they have to use CGI instead. But from what I saw the CGI has me pretty worried. Gollum, and the stone giants looks great but stuff like that wide shot of rivendell, some of the sky, and especially the wargs, trolls, and goblins look REALLY CGI. Maybe it's not completed yet but so far the stuff looks not even close to as good as the CGI from LOTR. I know it's a fantasy film but LOTR always had a sense of realism behind that. From what I've seen in the trailers, I'm getting a mix of realism with video game footage. I hate it when people say that CGI looks like a video game but here I found myself saying it. Anyone else agree?

I'm wondering about this as well. But if you look back on it, the first cut of FOTR was 6 hours long. So there's always the chance they have TONS of extra footage filmed that won't be used in the theatrical release.

It wasn't even close to that length. The Fellowship of the Ring is actually the shortest of the Extended Editions. That's filming an extra film worth of material.

I'm not talking about the length of the theatrical cut or the extended edition. I'm talking about the rough cut of their footage before they really went through the editing process. I'm pretty confident it's correct that it was around 6 hours or something. I will have to find a source for you though.

I'm a hundred percent confident you're wrong. Seriously, what else would have been in there to constitute 3 extra hours? The only thing they could expand on was entering the Mines of Moria and Lothlorien. Fellowship was the most tightly and well paced film of the bunch. Return of the King is actually the one that get close to being 5 hours if all the deleted scenes were included. Personally I think you're thinking that they had over 3 hours of footage that didn't make the theatrical releases, which is actually true, but it isn't that much over. All the deleted scenes that have made neither the extended editions or the regular editions are pretty well accounted for. Here's a list of the deleted scenes that made neither the theatrical or extended release:
quote:
Additional footage from the Battle of the Last Alliance in The Fellowship of the Ring prologue. An obscure shot from the trailers of two Elven girls playing about in Rivendell. Scene mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring commentary, about an animal disrupting Frodo and Sam while they sleep, after seeing the Wood Elves. Many animals were used, including rabbits and deer.[10] Dialogue from the Council of Elrond, such as Gandalf explaining how Sauron forged the One Ring.[10] An attack by Orcs from Moria on Lothlórien after the Fellowship leaves Moria. Jackson replaced this with a more suspenseful entrance for the Fellowship. Much of the lost footage can be seen as promotional material on The Fellowship of the Ring theatrical DVD and tie-in books, documentary footage on the Extended Editions, and Trading Cards. More Arwen footage, including a flashback scene of her first meeting with a beardless Aragorn (seen in The Two Towers teaser). Faramir having a vision of Frodo becoming like Gollum.[13] Footage of Arwen at Helm's Deep, cut by Jackson during a revision to the film's plot. Foreshadowing this sequence were scenes where Arwen and Elrond visit Galadriel at Lothlórien (seen in The Two Towers teaser trailer). The scene was edited down to a telepathic communication between Elrond and Galadriel.[13] Théoden speaking to the troops in the armoury, prior to the Battle of Helm's Deep. Éowyn defending the refugees in the Glittering Caves from Uruk-hai intruders.[27] An unknown scene displayed in The Two Towers preview of Éomer lowering a spear while riding his horse in a forest. Frodo and Sam fighting on the ground in Osgiliath (after Sam tackles Frodo away from the Ringwraith). The scene's fighting was deleted, but Frodo drawing Sting and pointing it at Sam after he is tackeled was left in.[28] A line of dialogue during the death of Saruman, in which he reveals that Wormtongue poisoned Théodred, giving further context as to why Wormtongue kills Saruman and Legolas in turn kills Wormtongue.[29] A conversation between Elrond and Arwen in a library in Rivendell, after Arwen decides to wait for Aragorn. Elrond leaves, saying, "You gave away your life's grace. I cannot protect you anymore."[30] Sam using the Light of Eärendil to pass the Watchers at Cirith Ungol. Aragorn having his armour fitted during the preparations for the Battle of the Black Gate. This was the final scene filmed during principal photography.[17] Sauron fighting Aragorn at the Black Gate. A computer-generated Troll was placed over Sauron due to Jackson feeling the scene was inappropriate. Sauron is also seen in a beautiful form as Annatar, Giver of Gifts.[17] Also at the Black Gate sequence, Pippin was seen in the trailer holding a wounded Merry, a scene which takes place after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields upon Pippin discovering Merry under the mûmak. Further epilogue footage, including that of Legolas and Gimli, as well as Éowyn and Faramir's wedding and Aragorn's death and funeral.[31]

Balls. Now I can't remember. It could be that it was for ROTK but I've been discussing this with other forums and I remember people saying it was FOTR. I will search for a link later today.

I kind of agree with you. I watched those 10 minute videos with PJ and he did talk about the much more locations they visited for this movie so I'm not worried about not enough locations. The CGI/video game look I did notice and hope it doesn't take away from the realism that LOTR had. I would like to see what PJ has to say about that. With everyone saying the 2nd trailer was worse. I think it went for what PJ was trying to accomplish the first trailer which was more dark and suspenseful was great. Trailer 1 The 2nd one wanted to show the comedy side and more about the characters and less suspenseful parts. Do y'all agree? Trailer 2 This movie is coming out 2 weeks before christmas. I'm always in a great mood for Christmas. It will be a great December.
