as much as I like to see a Cowboy go flying like that, maybe it was because Tate appears to have crouched then sprung off his feet into the block. At the angle he had, he could have accomplished the same thing (protecting the QB) with a more glancing blow that would STILL have taken him down but would have looked cleaner.

Yep...plus he left his feet to make the hit. That was dirty in itself.
