You are not doing it right, brah. If you have enough your investments throw off returns/income to live off of AND reinvest so you don't run out of cabbage.....hopefully, as I can't predict the future. The cost of health insurance, as structured today, is the biggest unknown.

I don't make plans that far in advance, when I feel comfortable I'll retire

I do not think you are following what i am saying here.

I said i could retire as long as my wife still worked.

With current rates of return you have to have a gazillion dollars to just live off those returns in the stock market(if my spouse did not work.

Honestly, who has that? Not many.

and better yet to reinvest with also? no way would that be enough for both. much less one. Why not work instead then? Which is why I am not retiring. See my points now?

I am investing in passive income investments....which is why i need to work to fund them. I am not talking about my other investments I have in the market, etc.

I got that the first time I read your post and was partially kidding with you. It all depends on what assets you own, how much you own, what price you paid, yield, dividend increases, potential pension, other income streams, non-callable higher yielding LT bonds, etc (by you I mean whomever is contemplating ER, not you specifically). And it gets back to health insurance cost in ER because if one gets a very costly health issue and is non-renewed/dropped, etc the cost is going to blow projected retirement costs thru the roof pre-Medicare coverage unless one has a private platinum plan from a prior employer. Just saying. I pseudo retired at 47, my wife still works PT but it is primarily for health insurance coverage and keep her from being bored. The insurance came in very handy this year dealing with the big C.

I'm 52 next month .Wife is 48 ,our 10 year plan starts on my birthday. Earning power could change that, but we start looking for retirement real estate in 2015.

Ya'll at the age that health shite can happen. I know from first hand. Very healthy one day, sick as a dog the next. I hope ya'll have a very good disabily insurance to protect ya'lls future. Thank God, we did which is making life easy to retire for me at 52.

and i agree with you the perfect plan would be live off of investment income. I am working on that(just in case i need it). not easy at all to do though for most. However for now i plan on working into my 70's. I have still so much to do and accomplish on this planet. WHo knows maybe by the time i hit 60 i may have enough passive income that I can maybe change my mind and retire. we'll see.

Now i could just draw down on what i have put away and try to die broke but as I alluded earlier that would bother me probably more than anything as you watch what you busted your behind for all these years dwindle away. I'd rather work and just semi-retire. and you are right health costs are the huge unknown. that alone could sap all your money in a heartbeat.

I have a separate cancer policy from AFLAC. I am really glad I have that long term disability policy also.

I could still see myself working 20-30 hours a week in my 70s.

This.

I'd like to be able to start working part time in my late 50s so the wife and I can travel. We married early and immediately became parents so haven't had many good opportunities.
