Not sure if this answer has been addressed yet, so forgive if it has.
But i think the best explanation lies in the first thing he did when he got here. His impression was our athletic and academic facilities for athletes had failed to keep up with the competition. The way he saw it was...why would quality athletes want to come to BatonRouge to play if they could go elsewhere and have access to facilities that were on par or better than what athletes playing in the NFL had. He recognized the role that an athlete's parent plays in their child's college choice. Parents tend to think more practically than players. The days of having hot chicks jiggle in front of recruits was past. Yes you may still need that, but when other good programs had that and more, why sign with a program that had hot chicks as their best selling point?
Saban brought the bling. Gotta have the infrastructure.
