A guy that I don't think gets near enough credit for country rock is Rick Nelson and his Stone Canyon Band. His 1970 slbum 'In Concert at The Troubadour' is damn good.
I've been saying this for years.

The Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
Had that album! Really enjoyed, of all things, the hand clapping in "Had an Dog,and his name was Blue".

That's not on Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
Great album though. The version with the Gram Parson vocals restored is probably in my top 10 of all time:
Gram Parsons' vocals from Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
1. "One Hundred Years From Now" (Guitar - Clarence White)
2. "The Christian Life"
3. "You're Still On My Mind"
4. "Hickory Wind"
5. "Life In Prison"
Lagniappe:
"You Don't Miss Your Water"

Damn! That sent me scurrying to Google to find the error of my ways. I stand corrected sir. Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde, it was. That was a long time ago.

Best remembered as Neil Young's backing band, Crazy Horse released several albums on their own, including their 1971 debut:
They were led by Danny Whitten (1943-1972, the subject of some Neil Young songs), and future guitar hero/Springsteen sideman Nils Lofgren.
Lofgren must have left before the pics were taken. He's replaced on the back sleeve by producer Jack Nitzsche, immortal as Phil Spector's arranger.
"I Don't Want to Talk About It"
"Look at all The Things"
"Carolay"

Yep, Gram Parsons & The Flying Burrito Bros were among the biggest pioneers of the genre...

Who else could have written a country song about the Holocaust ("Ride 'Em Jewboy"), or about a human being kept in a cage as part of a circus "Wild Man From Borneo"? Outrageous and irreverent but nearly always thought-provoking, Kinky Friedman wrote and performed satirical country songs during the 1970s and has been hailed as the Frank Zappa of country music.

BBC documentary on the LA scene of the '70s. I haven't watched it yet (as I said, I generally don't care much for that sound) but it apparently has a section on country-rock, so I'll probably get around to it sometime...
you should. the doc only starts to lag in the final third. the stuff on CSNY is pretty cool.

Yeah, I've watched it since. I don't care for CSN's music and David Crosby himself is extremely irritating, but the interview with David Geffen was very interesting.

i pretty much agree to both (i like some of their tunes), but as a sucker for band origin stories, i thought theirs was pretty interesting.

This list needs a little updating:
Uncle Tupelo: Graveyard Shift
Uncle Tupelo: No Depression
Uncle Tupelo: Moonshiner
Uncle Tupelo: Long Cut
Beat Farmers: Mondo
Country Dick Montana could out-party you, me and the entire OT. RIP.
And yeah, I like me some Uncle Tupelo

As I said earlier in the thread, I don't want to get too hung up on categories, but...
I love the Beat Farmers -- they get mentioned in the Cowpunk thread (feel free to bump it)
Uncle Tupelo belongs in an alt.country discussion

Alt Country. Cowpunk. Country Rock. Americana. Even Rockabilly.
All extremely close cousins. It's like Morris Claiborne and Tre'Davious White. Supposedly they are distantly relatad, but looking at them, you'd swear they were brothers
With that in mind, I'll mention that I was tempted to post some Blasters up in here too, but oh well...
