Yeah, the article mentions that they did some a while back, but basically only found out how hard it would be to do it right. There are thousands of old cypress stumps that prevented them from doing the whole job, so they ended up just cutting a few channels. Ten years later, they were back to square one and the corp is saying the only way to fix it is to completely drain, cut out all the stumps, and bury them in a deep pit in the middle. Also, in the last 20 years regulation on removal of dredging material has gone nuts, since it contains heavy metals. The result is a 20 million dollar tab that everyone keeps passing around the table. It's sad really. All the different cover and structure on those banks makes me drool as I drive by every morning, it would be awesome if it was a thriving lake system.

That stretch of bank across from sorority row along the bike trail used to be pretty good. But what they should do is dump the spoil along the shore line and create some high dollar real estate to defray some of the cost.
