I mean its obvious when you go back and read it

When I first read AGoT way back when...the TOJ initially went right over my head. It was only later toward the end of the book, after the 2nd or 3rd "Promise me, Ned" that it finally clicked. I went back and re-read it, and had a total nerd-gasm.

I thought I was so frigging smart...until I web searched "Jon Snow's mother A Game of Thrones" and for the first time saw "R+L=J" written out.
Silly me, thinking I was among the first to see it.
Not EVEN close.

But, I did call my college room-mate (the one that pushed the book on me in the first place) and explained the theory. His response was:

"Ahhhhh...I think you're reaching there, Bubba."

This guy was completing his Ph.D. in English Lit. at the time.

I won't say it's hard to catch (cuz I did) but I agree, you have to be looking for it. Ned's refusal to discuss the mother is basically the starting gun IMO.

I've read the series twice and still didn't pick up on any homosexuality besides Cersie and Dany.

There just isn't any other explanation for Ned to repeatedly have that memory. Plus, there's a pretty short list of reasons for Lyanna to be in a blood-covered bed.
