Fair enough, but the commonality doesn't have to mean shared blood, either. Now, if you buy Mance Rayder is Rhaegar (I'm not sold, but it is intriguing) - it starts to make sense again as a unifying "Targaryean" feature. But it is more likely these main characters that also have this in common have a deeper importance to the story - not necessarily ties to blood or House Targaryean.

I think it is simply knowing more about main characters. There is no history written for minor characters for the most part. Brienne's mother died when she was too young to remember her, but it's mentioned that Brienne had two younger sisters who died in the crib. Likely that her mother died with the second one, but not a major character so we will never know. In medieval times death during childbirth was so common women had to write out wills as soon as they discovered they were pregnant. I don't think it is anything more than it being common and us actually knowing more about these characters than others.

Also, if Mance is anyone, it is Arthur Dayne. Rhaegar died on the Trident, it is known.
