The Hobbit was a stand alone book, not part of a series.

Yeah... You don't Tolkien much do you?

He wanted the Silmarillion, The Hobbit and LOTR to be a series about gems and jewels. Also the demand for more books was there, the same way fans of ASoIaF demand books.
