I seriously doubt anyone would have told Ned about it. He was Robert's closest ally and best friend, and one well known for putting honor above all things. If I was on the opposing side, Ned would have been one of the last people I'd trust with that knowledge.

Yeah.. I had already given up on that theory based on the conversation with the Kingsguard at the tower of Joy... Ned did not know Lyanna was with child.
but it just seems odd they would send their best warriors to protect a child where no imminent threat existed to the child.
