To be honest, I don't really see either theory (her mom involved or her being a spy) as adding a whole lot to either books or series. I think the main thrust about this whole thing is the Bolton's betrayal along with making the Freys even more unlikeable.
I guess it could add a little to the view of Tywin's abilities as a schemer and to Robb's naiveté. But after awhile, just getting twist on top of twist gets kind of redundant.

Yes, I agree its over the top and redundant, but it kind of reinforces that in this series you really can't trust anyone except yourself.
In the "Lannister Honeypot" one part shows that Roose may recognize her as a spy. This in turn may be the catalyst that leads to him betraying them after realizing Robb will lose this war when he's so blind he can't see the enemy right in front of him, plus the benefit he may gain from joining Tywin (Winterfell & control of the North).
