Here's a theory that not only is crackpot, it's also half-baked. Or at least half thought out.
From reading lots of his other stuff, it is clear that Martin draws heavily on his real life experiences and emotions in fashioning his tales. (As all good authors do I think).
His early loneliness comes through strong in stories like The Second Kind of Loneliness. His badly ended romantic relationships show in stories like This Tower of Ashes and Meathouse Man. These and other stories tend to depict protagonists as individuals who are successful at their work/careers but not so much in their relationships. His ambivilent views on religion come through. Sometimes he is sceptical as in The Way of Cross and Dragon but he tends to recognize the power of spiritual matters (And Seven Times Never Kill Man) And sometimes his endings are not as tragic as his reputation says. (The Stone City).
Given all that, here's my brilliant conclusion:
The ending to SOI&F may end a little more on a happy note than we are thinking (If I remember right, Martin himself said something like it'd be bittersweet). I think he's in a pretty happy place right now. Has been recently married. Enjoys traveling to his cons and other than sparring incessantly with impatient fans seems to be in a pretty good mood.
I think one of his characters may end up going off with one of the other race - whether that's Bran staying with CotF or someone maybe even going with the Others to wherever they go I dunno.
But I think we see a happy ending for at least one of the characters most closely based on Martin - Tyrion maybe or Arya. Or maybe Jamie which fits him in some ways.
Thoughts?

Nice theory, but that means either Wyman Manderly or Samwell Tarly will have the happy ending...
