This is actually pretty telling. Martin makes sure that the reader knows that Jon posseses Stark qualities. And when Ned delivers this line he's doing so to let the reader know that Jon's lineage is tied to Ned by blood. If he were Robert's son why would he say this? Also why would Ned be protecting Robert's legitimate child? Another thing to note is that when Ned left King's Landing after it wassacked he did not have a child in his possesion. It's when he comes back from the Tower of Joy, where his sister was being held, and Dorne that he has Jon with him. Plus Jon is too young to be their first child bc he would be older than Joffery who is 15 I think. Jon is 14 in the first book. Now Gendry would be about the right age.
