Not sure why that's funny? It may be a red herring but its where Martin is leading us, I think.
And Shark-your whole last post- we are on the same page. I'm torn as to how much validity I can give this, but Ill concede Varys may well have intended to lead Tyrion to murder Tywin. With the pending arrival of Aegon in Westeros, it may have been the right time for Varys's exit or lengthy leave of absence at least.
I need to re-read Tyrion's escape for sure.
