not sure if this had been covered yet:

This is my crackpot theory

That Tyrion not Joffrey was the target on Joffrey's wedding day. He had several drinks from the chalice before and was fine, and only started choking right after after he had some of Tyrion's untouched food. The Strangler reacts right away, look what happened to Creesen. One little sip of it was enough to kill him right way.

Littlefinger never outright admits he had Joffrey killed just some vague hints. I think he would have bragged about it a lot more if the king was his target. Somebody got Tyrant to go after Tyrion during the battle, so somebody very powerful wanted him dead. Who was around during the battle,

I think there's holes in the pie theory. Littlefinger or one of the Tyrells (the two candidates I think was doing the poisoning) need Tyrion as a scapegoat. Joffrey dying better serves the Tyrells (for the sake of Margery) and even LF with his ulterior motives (wedding Sansa to get the North).

There's also the greater risk of multiple poisonings with the pie instead of just the cup. And it was when the chalice was refilled that he was poisoned. Someone could've easily slipped it in on the refill.
