I agree with that. I think Cersei is the FACE of evil in the series, Littlefinger is just the puppet master.

I'd say Robb/Grey Wind was(were?) better. The show never even hinted that Robb was using his warg abilities for scouting and lightning fast troop movement. But he pulled off ambush after ambush.

The King Arthur/LukeSkywalker/Simba/King David character is a pretty worn cliche on the fantasy aisle and Martin was brilliant in how he used it, and made it plausible, and then had the sixteen year old boy wreck it all by being a sixteen year old boy.

I agree with both of you.

Cersei is one of the most easily read characters in the series. She thinks she's clever and can play the game but she's so predictable. Tyrion and Jaime both observed that in their POV's.

I think LF is most likely to be defeated by Sansa even though that seems predictable. I don't see him surviving through the Others but it would be funny to see what would happen if Stannis encountered him. Doubt that Jon Snow would know what to say to LF.

It's hard to think about how certain characters could/possibly will interact. Like Jon would probably think Dany is whiny and immature and opposite of his wildling women type, while Tyrion would have to set her straight on her crazy father and whiny self.

Tor.com has released GRRMs excerpt from the Dangerous Women anthology.

quote:
The Dance of the Dragons is the flowery name bestowed upon the savage internecine struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros fought between two rival branches of House Targaryen during the years 129 to 131 AC. To characterize the dark, turbulent, bloody doings of this period as a “dance” strikes us as grotesquely inappropriate. No doubt the phrase originated with some singer. “The Dying of the Dragons” would be altogether more fitting, but tradition and time have burned the more poetic usage into the pages of history, so we must dance along with the rest.

From the long review linked at the end of the article:

quote:

Beyond all these little bits of Westerosi history repeating, we also get our first real glimpse of dragon-centric warfare, along with the problem of finding able riders. Since dragons will only accept and bond with riders of Targaryen blood, the story chronicles the search for bastard-born “dragonseeds” to join the fray (with mixed results)—a subplot which clearly holds some potential relevance for Daenerys and her trio of dragons as events continue to unfold in the novels…

So we finally get some details on dragon training and use.

I was rereading a feast for crows and don't know if this has been discussed in this thread but right before Aemon dies he goes over the prophecy for AA while thinking it's Dany but it made me further believe it was Jon. Aemon says " Rhaegar was certain the bleeding star had to be a comet" I believe the bleeding star was Sir Arthur Dayne the sword of morning of starfell that bled the day Jon Snow was born. This may have been discussed but I havn't really been in this thread and its way to long to go back and check.

Now we need for someone to digitally rip the Martin story out of the book and torrent it or put it on Usenet.

Well, shite. Not coming out until December.

How much of TWoW do y'all think Fat Man has written so far?

My bet is half....although that may be an optimistic estimate. He's been fairly tight lipped about his writing progression on this book, which can be seen as either good or bad.

I bet most of it is written, what seems to take the most time for him is editing to make a decent final product

I think this is a good estimate. Given the insane popularity of the series he knows he needs to stay out in front of the TV show. I don't think he'd want the show catching up to him because it could cause him to reveal things to the viewers that haven't yet been revealed to the readers. I'd hope he has a special place in his heart (if it, in fact, exists) for the book readers.

On a side note, A good friend of mine finished Dance with Dragons last night. Needless to say, he was very, very upset when he came to work today. He posts on TD and will begin reading this thread as soon as he finishes D&E.

Was just rereading one of the House of Black and White chapters in aFfC.

So the first faceless man would kill slaves toiling in the mines of Valyria who asked for freedom (to be killed). Arya says, "he should have killed the masters." The kindly man responds, "he would bring the gift to them as well...but that is a tale for another day, one best shared with no one."

Is this to mean that the Faceless Men are responsible for the Doom of Valyria?

December 2014 would be good too. Crossing my fingers that he's writing 'fast' but I guess we'll see what happens. Any shot that GRRM reads more sample chapters at conventions/posts them online or is all that is out now all that we'll see until the book is released?

Also, I'm not sure if that has been posted already, but it's an essay on Jon and Sansa and how their stories parallel each other. Very good read .

Also, saw this gem on the IMDb board . Probably one of the most Crackpottiest of Crackpot theories I've read.

quote:

HOWEVER, it's possible that Ned warged out of his body at the time of his death. We know that all of his children have a certain amount of warg to them (Bran being the strongest) and we know that wargs can sometimes flee their bodys on death and inhabit a new one. And who do we know who was at Ned's execution? Barristan Selmy. In book five IIRC he admits to attending Ned's execution in disguise. It's interesting that in his discussions with Dany Barristan Selmy keeps trying to paint the Starks and Baratheons as good people even though they were usurpers. And in book five we've got the part where "Barristan" muses about being in love with Ashara Dayne at the Tourney of Harrenhall. Well we know that Ned was in love with Ashara Dayne at the Tourney. Could Ned have warged into Barristan Selmy's body and gone to Dany in order to get revenge on the Lannisters?

A lot of people think so, it is even listed on a wiki of fire & ice as a possiblity. Which makes me wonder if Daenys Targaryen(I?) was a member of the Faceless Men?

During the War of the Usurper did Ned have possession of Ice? If so how?

That is some straight crack pipe level stuff.
Also, did Martin ever specify were they buried Robert? I would think as long as it wasn't impossible to get to, couldn't Thoros and Baric have tried to capture his body so as to resurrect him? Would be pretty bad arse.
