i picked up a new VHT classic 6 on ebay for $200 pp/s. it's one of the better cheap amps i've played, and at 6 watts you can crank it. then pick up a used mexi strat or tele, or maybe you can find a decent used korean epiphone. You'll probably want to pick up a used tube screamer or some other dirt box if you go this route, but you'll never outgrow this setup...

Go to guitar center and play a few amps. I would understand how pickups work and play each amp with several different guitars...and ignore all the idiot employees!
I wouldn't buy a lower end tube amp, especially used. Tube amps sound great cranked, but like shite on lower volumes. I would stick to a solid state (non-tube) amp, unless you increase your budget or buy it out of some dudes van.
