So the Directors WADS went by with merely a wimper? Right? We did have a lot of participation but the format of letting people write whatever they wanted failed. Horribly. (So freedom fails...hmmmmm...?) We did end up with a great list actually, so there's that. And plenty of votes really.

Anyways, what SHOULD be ahead: 70s (up next), then Genre ratings again (I'm thinking Action and Western for a good combo). I think we add Actors to the list, maybe that will be better than Directors? Anyways, then 60s, and possibly something off the wall, more fun.

What I am concerned about is the lack of participation/excitement. Sure it has now become a pattern for me to lag a bit (for some reason 2 of the last three WADS ended up colliding with large changes, a move and a new job), so that wasn't good). So what can we do from here:

1) Given my time constraints become more limited by the day, does anyone else REALLY want to take them over? I'm not giving them up easily, but if someone can be more precise and active, there's always that.
1b) Does someone want to seriously HELP me with the WADS. I would need someone detail oriented, and with Spreadsheet experience, It can be a little daunting at times counting votes by hand. And it takes 2-3 recounts. Which is also annoying, but I would welcome this help.

2) Is there something new to spice them up we can do? My only idea to this end was the TD.COM Great Movie Project, which basically would be a large spreadsheet of movies that, through some magical mathematical formula, combined all of our rankings into a "Current Top 100" List of the most important films right now. I wish we could include "Movies the Board is talking about" or something, but that's a pipe dream. Anyways, I want to spice it up a bit and just don't know how.

3) Any ideas for other WADS. See the Roadmap above, I'm sure there are things we are missing out. Scenes? Soundtracks? Ensembles? Cinematography?

Anyways, that's where we stand. This is by no means a plan to give up the WADS, not a bit. Just a way to make it more interactive and maybe inject some new blood in the process.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I would like to see some genre oriented lists like you said. I think a sports one would be good considering this is TD. The further we get into the older decades the harder it will be to make a list and the less participation you will see. I was actually surprised at the amount of ballots we had for the directors considering how difficult that one was to come up with.

How about a 20 greatest scenes list? Any era, any genre. Just list your favorite scenes from any movie and we do that. This would be good because we can most likely link Youtube clips to all the scenes that make the final list. And now typing this and rereading your post I see that you suggested scenes. Great minds. I'm not editing this though. You're getting this whole post. Deal with it.

I could probably help with tallying votes. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.

70s, action & western! Those will be fun.

Well I can't speak for anybody else but for me I've been in a writing funk. Hell I haven't even really been watching as many movies lately. I think I've seen 3 or 4 total in the last month.

Somebody had a good idea awhile back about a joint movie watching project. Where each week one board member would pick a movie for us all to watch then we would discuss it not necessarily in review forum.

The more the merrier. Sports is a killer idea. Good call.

Would be a gigantic help. I do it all on Google Docs now. SO that makes it easy.

Same here. Writing funk. New job that's, *gasp* corporate is already sucking the life out of me. Not really, I love it, but still, I never thought that would kill my creativity.

And Baloo has the cub, so a lot of the major writers are out right now.

I think if you're looking to bring in stronger participation, you're going to have to go with categories that the average M/TV Board poster feels comfortable participating in. Directors are always a tough one because for even an avid movie watcher, it can be tough to delve into the subject to the extent that you're able to write about it at a considerable length. You start getting too specific, limited then you pigeon hole yourself.

It may be best to start out with some more general categories to up participation then delve into more specific like cinematography, ensembles, etc.

Some that I think could be successful to start out with:

- Top Actors/Actresses
- Best Movies of a certain decade
- Genres (i.e. Horror (always fun), Action, Western, Chick Flicks, etc).

I also think given the shift to people watching more and more TV shows especially with the invention of platforms like Netflix that allow you to watch seasons at a time it may be time to include some television lists (I was under the impression that before it was movie only). I can't count how many "which show is the best" threads I've seen on here in the past few months.

This would be fantastic IMO. Start a thread asking for movie suggestions from the board, then start with movies that have the most votes and work your way down. Then start a thread for each movie as watched for discussion only.

i didn't even vote/participate in the DWADS because i haven't seen enough of what i knew to be the cream of the crop. i've got 5 or 6 kurosawas at home that i need to watch and i think he was number 1, iirc

1. Agreed that the Directors list was a fantastic final list. But I also agree that the open writings was probably not the best. Though *cough cough* there were at least two writers that cared. Not to mention any names or anything but I was one of them. I think being tied to something, not in a bad way, makes you more inclined to finish it. You could still post my Hitchcock and Leone/Ford write up's

2. I think the 70's were possibly the best decade for films of all time. I agree with etm though that off we keep going back in decades the fewer number of voters there will be. That being said, I would love a 70's list. After that I don't know.

3. Genre wise I'd love Westerns and Sports. Action would be hard to classify I think. You'd have too many debates on whether or not the movie should be labeled an action movie or not. Comic book/superhero movies could be another option. Westerns is my favorite genre so if I had just one choice that's what I'd go with.

4. I be glad to help with anything. Getting the threads going, tallying up the votes, sending out/organizing the emails or write ups. Just let me know. I am a spread sheet handicapped midget downy person though so no help there.

5. Boof

6. Maybe a dumb I idea but... Re-do the 100 MWADS. It's been years and apparently the original the FBI has it on lock down somewhere so that no one will ever see it again. That would require more work than any of the other lists though and obviously, it's been done before. But honestly the main reason I say this is it's almost as if the original doesn't exist. I think plenty of us have learned our lesson and started bookmarking these puppies.

7.

Yeah, I fell down on the writing. I also had the problem that I churned out about 50,000 words on the Olympics on my own site, which got me back into writing, but put every project on the back burner, including my planned "frick You, Bertolucci is a fricking Deranged Genius" article I wanted to write for DWADS.

I need to dig the WADS out of archive. We might need to redo the main list, as its been awhile. Opinions change.

I like a popular genre like action or a big decade like the 70s next. I'd want to do westerns as its my favorite genre, but getting in the more casual "let's blow crap up" fan isn't a bad idea.

I'm adamantly opposed to scenes or quotes. That'll just be a youtube mastabutory thread, and those, as a rule, suck. And it's just a stalking horse for favorite movie anyway, so just do favorite movie. And the voting would be a nightmare.

I could go for 50 favorite actors.actresses, or even 50 favorite characters.

I'd also like to say that our DWADS list is pretty great. I'd comfortably call that a legit list of the top 50 directors.

Chick flicks could be a fun list. If LOVING How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or Two Weeks Notice is gay then I'm putting in a name change request to Clay Aiken.

You could probably do some character specific ones like Top 25 Movie Villians, Movie Presidents, or Athletes.

But I think it would be fine if you limit it until after the votes are tallied.

Not as excited about this as

quote:

50 favorite characters

This because in the end it's the characters that those actors are playing that you love anyway (at least for me it is)

I like the idea of leaving decades behind and going for something new. The directors one was fun to think about.

I like the idea of genres. Sci-fi is my pic for that one. I do think the time lag may have hurt interest for some. And if you want write-ups you need to go back to the old system. Sad, but it has to happen.

Sci-fi and Comedies were the first genres we did. They were right after the 100 MWADS. I was a noob at that point I think. Wouldn't mind seeing those list linked (if they aren't locked in a dungeon somewhere) to see how crappy my list was.
