Was looking at those star/pyramid traps at academy. They wouldn't fall flat when I was looking at them. Are these a pain to use? Should I just get the cheap ring nets?

Will be deploying and checking from a yak

I would like to do some crabbing from a kayak also.

Would it not be easier to use the rings from a kayak because they are smaller and lighter?

No, get some good ones. Those cheap ones are a pain in the arse.

Those cheap ones do look like they suck. How the hell do the crabs stay in them anyway?

Agree.....get a good set of dipped ones, they will last a lifetime. I have my dad's old set of dipped crab nets and I imagine those things are at least 35yrs old.

Crabs only move laterally. When you pull on them (nets) the sides come up.

To the OP, get good ones.

I found some I've been meaning to buy. Can't make up my mind. First one, you don't have to buy their expensive harness. I'll probably get a couple of the second though.

We have caught more crabs on homemade nets than most folks here have lost. ...... BTW that net in that first link will lose you many crabs as it will toss them out

The crabs we caught on Grand Isle this weekend were the sweetest I have ever tasted.

I would say no.......go with the standard round ones. Sorry last night I had a few things to do when I got home and didn't have a chance to take a pic of mine, but I'll do it when I get home tonight.

You don't need to go with anything fancy, the nets I have accounted for many successful boils.

Also, are their crabs around the west side of Caminda Bay? Around the blue pin on this pic

You know, on second thought, if I were going in a yak I'd take a few strings and tie some chicken on them.

If the crabs are running you'll catch all you want with them.

Just fish trout lines riged with chicken necks. Weight the center down somewhat. Have a dipnet and dip them suckers. Just lift it slow. Crabs will hold on. Set them just inside the rock jettys on the inside of the island. Fish the tides. Crabs move with that.

Thanks, can you help me out here though. Not sure what you mean by inside of the island.

The north or bay side. You can put in a Gulf Stream landing, about 1 1/2 miles after the bridge on the bay side.

Oh, if the wind is blowing out the south, you will be ok. Hard north winds, you will be alright too!

One more thing. get a couple poles and a hammer to nail them suckers into the bottom. Poles should be close to 10' long.
