Credit Card Charge from a subscription/ Expired Card but

charges showed up on my new card.
My AE expired in March of this year. I never received the renewal card so I called them and they issued me a new card. The last four digits are different than my old with a new expiration date.
My question is how can an online subscription renewal show up this month without them calling and getting the new number and expiration date.
I logged in to the website and looked at my cc information on file and it shows the old number and expiration date.
Do I have a legitimate gripe to reject the charges. This is one of those things where if you do not catch it before the renewal date you have to pay for the entire year. $36 so no biggie but aggravating.
