My theory is that Paterno lost his mind about 15 years ago, so it doesnt matter what was going on he was too old and incompetent to deal with it. Stupid Penn St. allowed him to stay there 20 years too long.

That I can agree with. He should not have had the control over the program that he did in his later days. You want him to be the head coach? Fine. However, there should have been ample administrative people from the AD looking over various aspects of the program. The only thing he should have done was go to practice/games and make football related decisions.

Just a bit off topic, but as for Bobby Bowden's image: a good friend is a college ref & used to call Fla.St. games all the time. He said that Bowden would walk right up to him, standing on the sidelines, eyes on the field, and curse like a drunken sailor at the ref on the field who had pissed him off. From the stands it would look like he was just standing there.
