I've been re-watching the series and was watching the Cell saga over the last few weeks. I've always forgiven small plot devices in the interest of drama, but this one seemed a bit egregious to ignore.
In the episodes just before Goku wakes up they learn about Cell and spend a few episodes playing cat and mouse with him while absorbs whole cities. Right after Goku wakes up he immediately decides that the best course of action is to take their 4 best fighters out of commission for 2 days. There is only one problem with that. At that point Cell was still at a stage that they could deal with him. Waiting to train gave Cell the opportunity to find the androids.
The only way that Cell was ever going to come out of hiding was for a chance to get 17 and 18. I think a better plan would have been to draw him out like they did with the fight between 17 and Piccolo, only this time have Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Trunks waiting to prevent an escape. Just so long as they all attacked him at once (a novel concept in the DBZ universe to be sure) they would have been able to take him. Let's not forget that this wasn't like the situation on Namek where the guy they were fighting was so much stronger than everyone else that i didn't really matter how many people they had, because Goku was the only one who could touch him. Cell might have been stronger than all of them, but between the 4 Sayans and the android's he wouldn't have stood a chance.
And apparently this is Vegeta's idea of training

At this point, Android 17 an 18 were stronger than Cell and the Z fighters. Goku and Vegeta were about equal, and stronger than Gohan and Trunks.
After Piccolo fused with Kami, he was (at that point) the strongest fighter on the show (until we found out how badass 16 really was). Piccolo was going toe to toe with 17, and would have destroyed Cell, had he not escaped using the Solar Flare technique. After that point, Cell had absorbed too many people and became much stronger than Piccolo. Android 16 was handling Cell, but fricked up and let him absorb 17 anyway. If they would have teamed up with the androids, they could have beaten Cell before he had a chance to absorb 17 or 18.
This saga could have taken so many different turns.
