Can we just go back and talk about how beast Mystic Gohan is for a while? I really want to ask Toriyama why he makes him the strongest guy in the universe and then always has him lose.

Because he has all the benefits and weaknesses of goku amplified.
He has a stronger drive and power and strength and potential.
But he also has a stronger immaturity, less control of his power (they tend to control him when he powers up to full) and above all he has a much bigger ego as a fighter.
Goku will sometimes toy with his opponent as is the egotistical nature of Sayins, but he usually eventually comes back to his senses and controls himself. He regains his senses and fights smart.
Gohan on the other hand cannot seem to regain this control. As seen in his fights with cell and buu. When he gets pissed he completely surrenders to his power instead on trying to control it. That's why he is the most powerful fighter in the universe but loses battles because of his ego and loss of control.

That is why Goku is the perfect warrior. Vegeta is second, only to Goku. Gohan has the potential to be the biggest badass we've ever seen, but as you said, he can't control himself when he surrenders to his untapped power. He loses his head, and becomes arrogant to a fault.

I don't think so. Future Trunks was very modest and reserved. A lot of the cell saga he actually downplayed himself a lot because he was worried about hurting Vegeta's feelings.
Kid Trunks has some moments acting just acting immature and getting himself and Goten in over their heads. Fused together, Gotenks definitely is arrogant to a fault. That's actually probably that fused character's most dominant trait. Gotenks always rushes off to getting himself in over his head without thinking things through.

Yeah, Goten and Trunks are just two kids with little to no combat experience, and way too much power to handle. Goku fights and trains for sport, and because the Saiyan blood flowing through his veins tells him to. Vegeta's pride makes his push forward. Goku is the measuring stick that keeps progressing for Vegeta, and he knows he can't fall even further behind. His Saiyan blood and pride won't let him.

Was that a turning point in the show? I feel like they cheapened the super saiyan transformation. Would've been cooler to see how trunks or goten would've legitimately achieved it even if it was that young

When your dad is that overpowered, it would be stupid to progress at the same speed as somebody like say Gohan did.

That's definitely the point where becoming Super Saiyan became really cheap. They probably should have just made Goten and kid Trunks background characters. We probably wouldn't have gotten Gotenks, but that's ok.

yeah having goten and trunks normal saiyans and having them form Gotenks and then having them challenged enough to even go SSJ would have been better

one thing about dbz that other animes usually do better is limiting that power. They finally started doing it with SSJ3 and that Goku cant sustain it for very long. This shouldve happened awhile ago so as to not make everyone so ridiculously overpowered

I like that they just made the bad guys even more powerful. It was a good way to do that. Everyone lost to Freiza, to Cell, to Buu.
It was usually less about power in the end and all about controlling that power and fighting smart.
As the fighters grow more powerful they attract more powerful villains.
