As stated they can and will attack cats and small dogs.
They will avoid humans unless rabid.
They can be a carrier of rabies but it is far less common than bats, skunks, or racoons.
For the most part if you see a wild animal in an uncommon setting like roaming around during mid day for a mostly nocturnal animal or standing its ground or approaching humans when they could easily go the other way you should assume they are injured or infected.
My opinion is any carnivore that loses the fear of humans is dispatchable.
