I just picked up an old glenfield model 25 from a friend and plan to re-blue the barrel and redo the stock. You can probably pick up a used bolt action .22lr for less than $100 but as most said it is hard to beat the ruger 10/22. I also have a browning .22 take down.
Quite a bit more expensive than the ruger though.

I love my 10/22 - get the base model at walmart or academy - Walmart was cheapest when I got mine several years ago. Then go online to midway or CTD and accessorize as you wish.

or

Go to the pawn shop and pick up a little .22 for about $100 and go shoot.
