Today was my first attempt at inshore fishing. I went to St Augustine's Inter coastal waterway. I rigged with a 12" leader with a 1oz weight. I used a #4 hook that had the head thing on it. I was using dead shrimp. I had lots and lots of small fish hits but they were stripping my shrimp and I couldn't hook them.
What the heck am I doing wrong. I need help bad. The current is pretty strong so I have to use some weight to keep it down.
I did see a manatee which was really cool. I caught two little fish.

I would use a kahle or croaker hook instead of a jighead. 3/0 - 5/0.
If you have that many small fish cut one up in addition to the shrimp and put a small chunk on the hook or use Gulp shrimp.
You will have bait longer.
Strong current is good, they have to have big fish down there.
Try fishing right out of the current, near rocks if they have any.
If that fails you may want to try the slip cork about a foot off the bottom near, but not in, the current.

No idea what you are fishing for or the best way to catch them. I'd ask locals or you might get lucky here.
12" is pretty short around here, can you really fish where you need a 1 oz. weight under a cork? Might try the bottom.

Good point. Supposedly, the ICW has about everything. They come in with the tide and feed on smaller fish. I'm told that there are a lot of founder right now.
I'm thinking that my hook was way too big. whatever was n there, they would very quickly pick it clean.
I tried Gulp for a while and didn't get any hits whatsoever.

Fishing bottom with dead shrimp is the perfect recipe for a day filled with annoying as frick hardheads.

LSUwag - I probably can't help, as I don't get to go as often from Shreveport as when I lived in Baton Rouge. I'll be at Crescent beach the week of Thanksgiving though and would love a chance to hit the Matanzas. If you wanna supply the boat, I'll buy everything, fuel, food, bait and we can try them out! FWIW, i use live shrimp and cocahoe (mud minnow) and artificial cocahoe usually on 1/4 oz jighead.
