I've had success with cooking them under the broiler. You'll get browning, but you definitely won't get the nice heavy sear that a grill or cast iron will give you. There's little to no smoke, though, because the liquids that create smoke never hit the heat source. Just make sure you put a cookie sheet or something under the meat to catch the drippings, or you're going to have a mess. Also, you really need to either cook directly on the rack or have a secondary rack to put the meat on. You don't want it just sitting in a pan under the broiler stewing in its own drippings.

It's become my go-to for a quick and easy steak when I don't feel like smoking up the house or firing the grill.
