I read that the night Hugh Grant appeared on the Tonight Show to talk about his prostitution arrest was the night people tuned into the Tonight Show and it held number 1 since.

Yes it was the Hugh Grant interview that put Leno at number 1 and he held it. If I remember correctly when Leno took the tonight show back from Conan Lettetman pulled ahead in the ratings. No idea what the ratings are on average now.
