I disagree. A DLP is far more important to a team than a AM. Xavi is the lynchpin for two of the best teams the soccer world has ever seen. Passing to Messi has little to do with it, as Xavi's primary job is not to make assists, but to set the tempo of the play. As we saw this last tournament, Spain can slow play to a standstill, and then change tempo precisely when they want to.

And be ineffective in the attack, though I will admit it's basically defending with the ball.

More like precisely when they bring on Fabregas and actually insert a central midfielder who is not afraid to attack.

Like I said Xavi is great at what he does on the teams he plays for but he is extremely one-dimensional and while "worthless" was obviously too strong a word he is still vastly overrated.
