$20.5 million last night. They're looking at a $50 million weekend, which would be better than 'The Hangover' did in it's first weekend.

'Magic Mike' also did really well, making $18 million.

'Madea' was #4, behind 'Brave,' with $10.2 million, which was actually better than expected for Friday night. So no guarantee yet that Tyler Perry will be hanging up the fat suit any time soon.

If those #s hold up over the weekend that would be a solid box office haul for a weekend with no typical summer blockbusters.

That's a pretty smart pair of movies to come out at the same time. Guys hit up Ted, ladies hit up Mike and they split the top gross.

Probably has something to do with it being a million degrees outside. If batman had come out this weekend good lord...

How did Ted beat Magic Mike?

MM has a built in audience that has a great track record of making mediocre movies box office explosions.

Just spitballing here, but I'd say more women watched Ted, than men watched Magic Mike. Plus Magic Mike is Rated R. All three movies you just mentioned are PG-13. That will effect the teen crowd.

The advertising campaign did a great job of linking Seth McFarlene to this movie. Not only was he the voice of Ted but he was the director.

With Seth McFarlene comes every single Family Guy viewer and that's a pretty big built in audience as well.

Still won't be surprised though if Magic Mike wins the weekend

Ted and Magic Mike are both rated R.

His point was that Magic Mike being R would lower the # of teen females that would see it, as opposed to the teen females that could get into those other movies where the females really pushed the ticket sales into the hundreds of millions

I agree. Parents would take their teenage kids to see Ted. I can't see many parents taking their daughter to see Magic Mikes Penis.

Do black people feel obligated to go see Tyler Perry movies?

Yeah, no male nudity but 3 separate shots of Olivia Munn's rack. Trying to get the men to come to the theater with their significant others apparently.

Why would they?

I don't think they go because they feel obligated, I think they go because they genuinely think he's hilarious.
