We have to extend him the QO to make him Restricted.

Has no bearing on his long term deal. If he turns down all long term deals and just signs the QO, then things get very interesting.

Tendering him means he is now an RFA.

He can either take the one year offer on the table from us, sign a longer deal with us, or shop for an offer sheet from another team.

If he signs an offer sheet, we have the right to match those terms and keep him.

Best case scenario is that a team offers him quickly and we match at their rate rather than what we can extend him (one less year and smaller per-year increases in pay).

Worst case scenario, since we'll match any offer, is that he takes the qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent next year.
