You can't really blame the ump. Most catchers and pitchers will go an entire career and never have to think about that.

to my untrained eye it looked like he asked the ump "did he touch it" in disbelief. the ump shakes his head no, then they scramble to figure out how to appeal the ump wasnt sure they were appealing thats why he threw his mask on briefly, if noone said anything the play would have stood
