I don't know how anyone trying to be at least slightly objective can make this claim. The very worst of the 80s is 10,000,000,000 times better than even what has been considered "good" music from about 1999 on. The latter half of the 70s was certainly weaker than the 80s and the later half of the 90s was pretty weak too. The fact is that 1981 thru 1993 (the video music era) is EASILY the 2nd best era of modern music. The span from about 1963 thru 1975 will probably never be rivaled again though.
