I'm new to making .gifs but I want to figure out how to make .gifs from video. So last night I looked into it and basically the best thing I could find was using something like gifninja.com. But that was kind of a pain in the butt.

For instance, I wanted to make a .gif from a clip of a video I have on my HD. It was an .avi video though, so I had to convert it to m4v to put in iMovie so I could cut out the section of the clip I wanted to put into .gifnija. I did that and .gif nina didn't accept m4v files (at least I guess that's what the problem was) so I covered it back to .avi and it worked. On top of that being a pain in the butt to do all the converting, gifnija makes the quality of the .gif really bad (maybe that's normal?)

So, basically what I'm asking is, is if there is an easier, better way to do this? maybe a free software what will allow me to upload a video into it and edit what clip I want to make into a .gif and then upload it? or are these stupid questions and the way I'm doing it the easiest?

example of the .gif I made last night. First I ever made. it was an HD video but it really lowered the quality. Thanks for any help

I'm still getting the hang of gifs myself, so Rattle,Vol, or NGOP are prolly your best bets.

Rattle told me to start playing with the "dithering" function, which has helped my video quality.

I use Gimp, which is tough (for me) to do gifs, but you can do it.

I also use Online converter to convert things like Youtube videos into gifs.
Online converter

After that you can load them into the program you use to work them.

That is some very heavy compression in that video. If the source is nice clean HD, then gifninja is frickin' it up.

Here is one I did the other day from a 720p mkv file:

I use AVS Video Converter and Adobe ImageReady.

I can give you a more detailed rundown of the process I use if you want...but it will be specific to those applications. Let me know and I will help if I can.

ETA: I was looking on their website, didn't see ImageReady, do they call it AIR now?

yea man. tell me what you know. the more detailed the better, even if it is software specific. It will just make it easier on me thanks!

nds as to the video, its 720 so I guess it is the compression. I have to convert the film from .avi to m4v though to get it into iMovie to edit the section i'm going to make the .gif with, then convert it back to .avi to get it into gifnija. I'll admit I know practically nothing about compressing videos. Everything I know is from googling video converter software and trying it out.

I use handbrake to go from .avi>m4v. and MPEG stream clip to go from m4v>avi. I know nothing about specifics of what I'm doing though, I just hit convert and let it do its thing

They no longer make ImageReady. CS2 was the last version with it. I don't know if you can still get it.

No, AIR is not ImageReady

I will put something together. I will use that clip so you can see the results. What episode is that?

All of the attributes from the old Image Ready application are now directly inside of Photoshop. I use After Effects (for video conversion) and Photoshop to turn my converted video into a .gif. However, there are plenty of programs that will convert video, so use one you are comfortable with. The other piece of advice I will offer is convert to a lossless format. This way you are losing 0% video quality during conversion due to compression. The best format is quicktime movie (.mov) the codec you want to select is the animation codec. Also, Photoshop is very compatible with this format. You can read more on this subject online....I wouldn't steer you wrong.

SOURCE: HDTV Broadcast 720p mkv file

1) Pull mkv into AVS

2) Trim/cut all video out other than clip you want

3) Export frames to png image files (this is 75 frames)

- I do frames because sometimes I run them through third party filters/converters

- I do png because it's lossless. Like TNGOP said, keep everything the highest
quality you can throughout the process

4) Import png files into ImageReady

5) Crop watermarks out

6) Change image size width from 1280 to 500

7) Run batch to sharpen each layer

8) Save as gif (256 colors, perceptual palette, diffusion dithering)

That's it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Upload to youtube, but make the video private so no one else can see (if you don't want public access). There are a few free on-line converters that convert from any points in time from a youtube video to gif. I forget the names, but they are easy to find. No program to download.

Then if you want to save the new gif, just right click and save.

damn man I should have said I was using a mac. I though I did and I don't think I did. I don't think AVS is made for mac and I swear, I just cannot find a video conver that lets me actually edit what section of the video I want to use for the .gif

anybody have any ideas for something comparable to AVS?

I appreciate your help man. I already downloaded that one and tried it

Maybe I'm missing something, but with that software I don't see the option to trim video or to export the video the frames. I'll keep trying

eta: it does say you can though, so I must be missing it.

Are you saying you can make gifs in photoshop itself or do you need the after effects? I tried one time and all it did was save each frame as a layer. The gif wouldn't play. Any ways around this?

You have to have photoshop cs3 or later to be able to construct gifs.

When you save it you have to save it under "Save for web use." It'll bring up a menu that will show you how big the file will be, let you preview the gif, and alter some other settings.

Been trying a "bookmarklet" from Dirpy. Works great.

I use VideoConverter by Foxtab.

Sometimes use my Pinnacle Studio movie editing software, or Camstasia, which is bundled with Snagit, a great image capture software (we use it at work too).

Gif Animator 5.0 is simple and easy to use. Don't like Gimp. Photoscape is free and simple to use to make Gifs too.
