Are we really losing ground in recruiting or have our players been undervalued?

Les Miles and staff has accumulated some great talent over since he has been here. Every year we are considered one of the most talented teams in the country. Why are we getting such low ratings by the recruiting sites. Rivals had last year's class ranked 18th. This season ESPN has us at 13th. I think this class looks extremely strong. But are we looking at things thru P&G shades or are we really not getting top end guys?

Edit: Conclusion, ESPN sucks

what exactly has this staff done to not prove to you that they develop talent well...3 stars, 4 stars, and 5 stars...chill and enjoy the recruiting ride. Our talent is just fine.

I would look more at Rivals, 247 and Scout for ratings and that is never a sure thing. ESPN recruiting service is garbage. They have no clue and never will…
The ratings only give us a sense of the potential the class may have. We have to wait for reality…..
No site is perfect but ESPN always has the wrong information or are way behind everyone else when getting their info.

Rivals has us as the #5 class right now if that makes you feel better. Plus we still have plenty of big names still on our board like Williams Beckwith Gilmore etc.
It'll all be ok

LSU is the most talented team in the country....right there with Alabama.

Seriously, who has more talent than LSU? I am talking total team talent, and depth

This class will be another top 5

As long LSU keeps dominating....I could care less where they finish in the recruiting rankings

Last year was a bit disappointing with some big fish that got away, but we have already made up for it....

We recruit based on OUR needs, not what rivals says.

They don't put much effort, if any into talented jucos and players with injuries who don't have much tape.

For instance, Ricky jefferson was ranked much higher before his injury.

I think the recruiting rankings are more or less accurate.

You'd definitely want the top-ranked class vs No.18 and last year, was, in many ways a disappointing class, especially losing out on Davis and Collins.

However, LSU has recruited top ten classes generally, and seems to have developed those classes very well overall. Outside of the QB position, you hear people saying almost every year that LSU has as much talent as anyone in the country.

1. A lot of that goes to Moffitt

2. LA seems to frequently have players that are under the radar who become great players (TM7, MC9 etc)

LSU has lost some battles, but the talent in place right now is at least top 5, if not higher

Will be interested to see if this holds with some expected losses from this junior class.

According to Rival's star rankings Florida should still be winning the SEC.(see their 2007, 2008, and 2010 class)

I have lost a lot of faith in ESPN. I think their tack is always about ratings and "controversies." I certainly think they pander to some schools, and I think they definitely have their favorites. I don't think Miles is one of them.

I remember when we offered Tyrann Mathieu. I thought it was a mistake. He had no respect from the recruiting services. He was barely rated. He was undersized, and it certainly looked like a waste of a scholarship. He goes to a camp, and thank God, people who know more about football than 99% of the people on this board see things that make him look like a good fit.

I think that talent is one thing, and talent is overrated to some degree. It's about your work ethic, your ability to learn, your "coachability," and your devotion to the team and the greater good. Think about it. Haven't you ever been to a high school reunion where you looked around the room, and the hotshot high school eighteen year old there didn't find a cure for cancer while the non-descript nobodies are running businesses and bigger successes than you ever imagined they would be? What worries me more than the talent is how do we play them all and keep them happy?

Feel free to ignore this.

Rivals lost some respect last year. They didn't count 3 lsu players towards rankings and had Louisiana players ranked wrong because they lost a scout specifically covers la. some Austin based joker trying to cover la. I have always thought scout was most accurate and fair. I follow the main 3; scout, 247, and rivals. Espn, maxpreps, etc are a complete joke.

I read the title of this thread and was almost willing to bet that it was a bump from a few months ago. But no, it was started today. We are currently on the verge of locking down the state and crushing it out of state by getting what we need and people are still worried about ESPN.

You have to consider WHO is responsible for evaluating the talent in-state for the bigger outfits.

ESPN is pretty unreliable in general.

Rivals is Scike Scarborough. There's nobody there that doesn't realize by now that guy sucks. He's been mailing it in for several years now and was never a truly accurate film grader or talent evaluator of any note to begin with.

He was asking folks as recently as a month or so back who John Diarse was at a 7 on 7 competition.

Scout is...Who again? Randy Ro-freaking-setta? What a joke.

Now 247 is the new player but they are up and comers and ultimately, you'll see those rankings-especially in 2014 & 2015-start to improve thanks to Sonny & Shea putting in time and effort on the recruiting front to rank the STATE.

They profile and analyze the STATE, and not just the kids LSU is after.

But you see us undervalued because we have guys running sites that are completely asleep at the wheel with one notably excellent exception.

Didn't read all the responses to OP, but one thing the first-pagers failed to note: If LSU actually signed the ones that were at the top of their board, they would rank much higher. True that the staff does a good job of development, and LSU has good talent despite losing out on a number of recruits they wanted, but to deny that LSU could do better- and at same time have a higher recruiting ranking- is major denial. Let's see if the remaining top La. players stay at home this year (or if LSU signs those who are better than them.)
