Just bought it on steam.. first time ever playing it. Is the DLC a must or can I just go through the main story and be ready to play 2?

DLC is 100% optional for ME1, but you might want to buy ME2 DLC because it includes squad members that appear in ME3 if they survive the final mission (And they help for that mission).

I thought I remembered something about if you lose your character in battle then you lose them for the rest of the game or something? Is that true?

I don't even remember dlc's from ME1.
The dlc's for ME2 are very good and definitely worth it.

Buy Bring Down the Sky definitely. Don't buy Pinnacle Station unless you are replaying the game because you get badass armors when you beat it. Man I miss throwing Colossus Armor on Wrex(beast mode)
