Why don't they just ban fatness?

I have no problem with people being fat as long as they don't go out in public. They are welcome to be fat in the privacy of their own homes.

Thanks my take is that it will be difficult to pass this proposal but an alternative option would be to tax the hell out of these products, as well as fast food.

Yes, I think private businesses should be able to allow smoking if they so choose.

Yeah, New York is a ghost town these days.

I heard they're going to bulldoze Brooklyn and everything north of 50th Street in Manhattan and just make it a nature preserve.

Dumbass.

I'm willing to wager that the insurance industry lobbyists support this proposed legislation.

Many of you have a very naive perception of how legislation gets proposed, written, and passed...

With this type of logic it's safe to say that food in general contributes to obesity, so why not just ban all food...

That's not the case though, it's a person's lack of self control that contributes to obesity nothing else. Just like guns don't kill people, people make the choice to kill people.

I'm well aware of how special interest groups affect legislation. That doesn't change the fact that it's a stupid and unnecessary law.

The more important piece of info is that criminals, in general, do NOT adhere to gun laws.

As long as you're being consistent.

FWIW, I also oppose smoking bans for the same reason. There is an interesting experiment (though I don't think it's intentional) in Atlanta with regards to this. In Fulton County, there is no smoking ban, but I've seen many establishments voluntarily change to or open as smoke free for, you guessed it, ECONOMIC REASONS. They want to cater to families during the day, as well as the people who simply don't want to be around smoke.

Other places are happy to allow smokers because they are doing fine with the non-family demographic. And the customers are free to choose where they spend their money. It's a beautiful thing.

I'm not arguing in favor of the proposed legislation. Rather, I'm arguing against the reasoning used by some people on this thread.

I happen to agree that the legislation is stupid.

I don't like it simply b/c it is the govt. once again trying to control how we live our lives and make decisions for us.

Do you need a 44oz drink? No.
Is it your choice? Yes

This is no different than the city in California that make fast food places stop putting toys in kids meals.

They're simply trying to generate more revenue. They say they're fighting obesity, but people are gonna buy more of the smaller sized sodas.

ETA: Oh and I bet vendors love this.

I'm just confused how they would legally be able to single out one sugary liquid. It seems to me, soda companies could have a very legit argument that if NY tries to ban big sugary drinks, they have to ban big sugary foods like cakes and hell, they may just have to ban sugar all together
