So are we really to believe that Kelly Leak couldn't pitch? Amanda was all Buttermaker had, but Leek had to be able to pitch with that cannon of his.

I have a harder time believing that Kelly Leake was a badass. Dude was like 5-3 or something as an adult.

Most really short guys I knew growing up were either absolutely fearless, or spent all their time in the library or hanging out with their mom or younger siblings.
In that era, there was a lot more social interaction amongst kids. So the "little guys" had to "run with the big dogs or stay on the porch", so to speak. And oftentimes, to prove themselves worthy of the bigger kids' respect, they were first to do stupid/dangerous things. That often meant fighting as well, and if a little guy could prove himself with his fists, he became a "badass".
These days, badassery is calculated by how many kills you have on Call of Duty or how quick you are with a snarky text message to your gay little friends.
SO, YES, to people my age, it is very believable that in 1976 a guy like Kelly Leake could and would be a bad arse.
(and yes, a guy like Kelly Leak beat the crap out of me one day...but we were all hanging around and goofing off a few hours later.

man, growing up in the 70's was great. No real worries for parents. During the summer you could get up and leave on your bike in the morning and not get home till the streetlights came on. Sad cause you really don't see kids out doing things Outside
