I had the distinct privilege of watching Charles The Great each Fall of his Jr and Sr seasons when he broke virtually all the rushing records at LSU at that time. I was in the Golden Band from Tigerland and have one distinct memory to share. We were lining up in the South end zone just before half-time for our performance. As a trumpet player, we were front row of the band on the back edge of the end zone. Charles breaks off one of his off tackle runs from the 45 yard line, jukes a linebacker at the 38, bulls over the strong safety at the 30, and out races the CB for a 45 yard TD. His momentum carried him right to us where he gently handed the ball to a fellow band member. With that type of ground level vertical view of the play, I was able to truly witness his Greatness. He had quick moves to make you miss, tremendous strength to take on a tackler and track star level speed. He was Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson before those two arrived on the national collegiate scene. Most importantly, he is a first class act who maintained humility through his years of stardom. I was lucky to be a student at LSU during that era.
