Where do you go if you have an idea for an invention?

I've had this idea for a while but never really gave it much thought.
Do you go somewhere like you see advertised on TV, inventtech I think it's called? Then what, do they have a database to see if it already exists? Then if it doesn't, how do you go about getting things off the ground with a prototype, assuming it's something technical you can't build yourself?
I'm assuming it takes a lot of money, which is another reason I haven't thought seriously about it before.

IMO there are two routes: you either keep it secret and try to develop a product (expensive and time-consuming), or you patent it (not so expensive or time consuming) and later try to license the idea to a third-party company who can develop and sell a product.

If I went the latter route and just sold the patent, would there be any real money to be made doing that?
Also, can you patent just a general idea? Like I said the actual product would involve a bit of technology that I simply can't do.

I encourage you to do a little recent research on patent licenses and patent litigation. There is very little more valuable in America right now.

Now we're getting into the realm of legal advice, which I am not allowed to give you at this stage. I encourage you to talk to a patent prosecution lawyer to answer these questions.

I can give you really good information if you tell me what the idea is.
